Literary analysis might sound scary or difficult but it actually isn't when breaking it down into smaller parts. Which is what we are going to do. We are going to break down the literary analysis into four basic parts and take a look at what should be included in the four points.

1. Plot

The plot is basically the story itself, the events that occur and how they are organised. Are the events put into a chronological order or not? Explain what happens in the novel, film, you name it and in what order the events happen.

2. Characterisation

Characterisation might be e bit more difficult than plot since characters can be difficult to understand fully. The basic things included in characterisation is of course the characters and how they are represented, i.e what do they look like? What are their personality? You could also say, how the characters are portrayed.

3. Setting

Setting is built up of two different parts, (1) the location, where does the story take place? and (2) time, when does it take place? To identify the setting you should look after descriptive language, meaning, descriptions how is the environment surrounding the characters described? Is it described at all?

4. Themes

Themes is the most difficult part of literature analysis since literary work seldom has only one theme, they often contain several themes and it is not always easy to spot the themes. A theme is basically the main subject or message of a literary work. Lets use an example, Harry Potter, which I asume most of you are familiar with has multiple themes throughout the series, but the main ones are love, friendship, evil vs. good and so forth.

When analysing literature try to use these four basic points and your analysis will be great, but keep in mind not all novels has all of these four points included. Sometimes the setting isn't described at all and then you omit that part, sometimes a novel might not have any characters then you omit that part. In order of making students' lives miserable a literary work ALWAYS has a theme.

The Garden Party is a short story published in 1921. It was written by the New Zeelander Katherine Mansfield.

The Garden Party is a story about a garden party taking place at a mansion. In this mansion lives a white family who has many children. One of these children is Laura. Laura and her siblings are planning a garden party and invites friends and neighbours.

However, the family gets news that a man has been killed in an accident and this man lived in the poor neighbourhood just outside of the Sheridan familys land. Laura is very chocked by the news and asks both her sister and her mother how they are going to stop the party in time since she belives it unappropriate to hold a party when a neighbour has died. Both her sister and her mother thinks her silly since they do not know the man or the family and because they see themselves more important than the poor black people living just outside of their lands.

One theme of this story is clearly racism and how white people see themselves as superior to black people. Another theme of this story is social class. The Sheridan family lives on top of a hill and looks down on the poor neighbourhood where the black people live. In the story Mansfield also writes about workmen and how Laura is superior to them since she belongs to a higher class and not working class. Laura is puzzled by the way the workmen speak to her since she is raised to belive that she is more important than people like them.

This superiority to lower classes is shown in several passages of the story. One which stuck to me was the part when Laura is going to go to the dead mans family with leaft over food from the party and is going to bring them some lilies to. However, her sister points out that Laura cannot carry the lilies since they will ruin her beautiful dress. This part of the story shows that Laura and her family thinks that it is more important look beutiful than to show kindness to other people.

This story is good material to use to get students to learn about the history of racism in the world since The Garden Party portraits racism in a understandable way.

The Red Shoes is a short story written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. Most of Andersen's fairy tales have an underlying meaning to them and The Red Shoes is not an exception.

The story is about a little girl named Karen who gets a pair of red shiny shoes. She really wants to wear them all the time but she is not allowed to wear them to church since it is not concidered to be appropriate. However, Karen wears the shiny red shoes anyway and everyone at church is looking at her red shoes. Even Karen herself thinks of her church instead of paying attention to the mass. She even goes so far that she ignores her sick fosterparent to go and party in her red shoes. The story ends with Karen being cursed to dance forever in her shiny red shoes.

This story actually tells about vanity and how Karen cares more about her looks than what is appropriate. This subject is very important today since we are very vain today and care more about how we look to other people than caring about other people. It is more important to have the new iPhone or what ever it is than actually caring about that every one does not even have food on their table every eavning.

The story also contains symbolism, which in this case one of them are the red shoes. By begging God for mercy and gives up her red shoes Karen is allowed to go back to church. The red shoes symbolises ones pride or vanity and not until we give them up we are allowed redemption and join God in heaven.

Most of H.C Andersen's fairy tales are available on google.
